Sarmila Bose

Sarmila Bose is a journalist, academic and lawyer with a regional specialisation in South Asia. Her interests span history, politics, public policy and law. She has a particular commitment to independent journalism and access to justice. Sarmila was a journalist in India for many years and held academic posts in the USA, UK and India. She holds the PhD in Political Economy and Government from Harvard University and LLM from Columbia Law School. She is admitted to the New York bar and as a solicitor in England and Wales, where she leads the employment rights team at a non-profit which assists disadvantaged workers free of charge.


Among Sarmila’s publications is Dead Reckoning: Memories of the 1971 Bangladesh War (Hurst & Co, UK; Columbia University Press, USA; Hachette, India; Oxford University Press, Pakistan; 2011/2012). Sarmila recently apologised to Jewish and other victims of the Holocaust for her greatuncle Subhas Chandra Bose’s silence on what had happened to them at the hands of Nazi Germany (Scroll.in, 13 March 2023). Under Such a Sheltering Sky, a novella published by Lightstone Publishers, is her first work of fiction.
